What changed on 1 July 2026
Supported independent living providers must now be registered with the NDIS Commission, and are audited against new SIL Practice Standards. Again and again, those standards ask that residents get information in a way they can understand.

- 1 October 2026Deadline for unregistered providers already delivering SIL to apply, so they could keep delivering while their application is assessed.
- Your next auditProviders already registered must comply from 1 July 2026, and are checked against the new SIL standards at their next audit (mid-term or renewal). A certification audit starts with a review of your documents, before anyone visits your homes.
In the new SIL standards
Three places in the SIL module use the same words: the language, mode of communication and terms each participant is most likely to understand. The first two apply where the same provider gives a resident both their SIL support and their housing. The third applies to every SIL provider.

What Easy Read does, and doesn't do
The standards don't name Easy Read. They ask that each person gets information in the way they're most likely to understand. For many residents that means Easy Read. For others it might also mean an interpreter, or someone talking it through with them.
We make your existing documents easier to understand. We don't give legal or compliance advice, and we can't promise an audit result. Your original stays the official document, and the Easy Read version explains it.
Quotes are from the NDIS Practice Standards published by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, including the Supported Independent Living module (2026).
